It’s that time…

August 13, 2010

Football season is here!  Which means that I am a single mother for at least 4 hours, if not many more, a week!  Why is it that when the Patriots are on, things that used to get done by my otherwise very helpful husband, suddenly don’t.  As an example – first preseason game last night – came downstairs after putting Maya to bed and the dishes were still in the sink.  Bummer!  Where was the hubby?  On the couch.  Glued to the game…ahhh, it’s the season.  At least it’s only a few hours a week.  Imagine if he was glued to the Red Sox or Celtics for every game?  I’d be in big trouble.  Not that he doesn’t watch both, but the Patriots are priority.

My only saving grace is that Maya also happens to love football!  Maybe it’s because it was always on when she was an infant, or maybe it’s all the cheering, but for some reason it keeps her attention longer than anything else on TV.  Tonight was no different.  She sat in her chair, staring at the TV…and then she started cheering, clapping, making little hand gestures, asking for more.  It was hilarious!  What can I say, she’s a true daddy’s girl.  With the 2 of them so into the Patriots…maybe I should go get a mani/pedi!  Hmm…when do they play again? 🙂

August

August 11, 2010

I have a love hate relationship with August.  I love that it’s still the lazy days of summer, but I hate that it means I have to fit everything in before the school year starts.  By everything, I mean both work and play.

At work we’re busy getting ready for the return of the students, making sure we have everything they need for a successful job search.  At home I’m busy making sure I’ve seen all my teaacher friends before they go back to school, taking Maya to swim as often as possible, and doing all the necessary summer stuff!

Just in the last few days we’ve been swimming in NH, to a pool party and to visit our friend Maria on the Cape…does this sound like ‘lazy’ days of summer?  Not so much lazy, but they have been fun.  As many of you know Maya doesn’t really do lazy – so to her August is great!  Here’s some proof:

(Maya trying her first lemon on the Cape…mmm…mmm!)

As I said, I have a love hate relationship with August.  It marks the end of the summer, but this year we’re going yo try to squeeze every little bit of fun out of it!  I love summer!

Chiquita Banana…

August 6, 2010

Just get this girl a fruit hat & she’s ready to do a banana commercial!  What?  Your clothes don’t look like this on a random Thursday?  Well they should!

Oh the Goats…

August 5, 2010

Just when you think a conversation may die…those sneaky little goats come right up and get you!

What do I mean by this?  Well, Uncle Kevin – who has been mentioned on this blog before for his fantastic ‘listing’ abilities, has a great kinship with Andrew.  And this is the email he recently sent to both of us:

SUBJECT: Tired of mowing your lawn?

Andrew,

While enjoying my breakfast this morning, I came across this article in the Wall Street Journal.  I knew you would be interested.   Free Range Landscaping

Here is another link for you:  http://rent-a-goat.com/Site/Welcome.html

Best, Kevin

If you take just a moment out of your day to read the article & check out the website you’ll immediately see why I am at a loss.  With legitimate enterprises like the WSJ taking on the case for goats…my argument gets dimmer by the minute.

Never fear (my neighbors in particular), there will be NO goat at 71 Barry Family Drive* – but it seems we will have to keep talking about it for a good long time!

If you’re curious, Andrew’s response was this:

Hi Kevin,
Thank you for this.  I am both elated by fact that this concept is gaining steam, and frustrated by my own failure to capitalize on this.  Please let me know if you have any interest in becoming a business partner in such an enterprise.

Best,
Andrew

There will also be NO Goat enterprises at 71 Barry Family Drive* either – if I have anything to say about it.

My furry little friends it seems you will forever be with us, in conversation that is.  Thanks Uncle Kevin for keeping the ‘Goats’ alive!! 🙂

*Addressed changed to protect those involved.

Dinner outside!

July 28, 2010

The weather around here has finally cooled off a little.  Or at least it’s not as sticky.  So for the last few nights we have been putting our new patio set to good use.  We strap Maya’s portable chair right to our chairs and she’s happy as a clam to sit at the table with us.

We’ve enjoyed steak tips, grilled chicken salads, and tonight…turkey meatloaf!  It’s so nice to be able to relax & enjoy the backyard.  But the best part is the clean up.  Maya is VERY into feeding herself these days…which usually means a royal mess all over herself, and the floor.  But when we eat outside, the mess gets taken care of by the random animals around rather than me.  Brilliant!  Now I know you’re thinking we shouldn’t be feeding the local animals, but they’re here anyway…what’s the harm in keeping them happy?  That & Andrew loves the wildlife so it keeps him happy too 🙂

I’m hopeful the weather will continue to be nice so we can keep enjoying!!

To the park

July 23, 2010

This morning Maya & I walked to the park.  It’s quiet in our neighborhood in the morning, much to Maya’s dismay.  When we go for a walk, she loves the cars, dogs, people…she’s a city girl in many ways.  But alas, she lives in a nice quiet neighborhood…which she’ll learn to love some day :).

We made it to the park & there wasn’t a sole there – not surprising at 8:15 in the morning, but we had so much fun.  The park with just 2 people is actually a blast.  We could run all over, go on whatever we wanted.  Maya thought it was so funny that I would go down the slide without her.  She mastered the shaky bridge all by herself.  She pushed the empty swings.  But her favorite part was definitely ‘escaping’ from the playground.  Sneaking out & running onto the baseball field…she thought she was hysterical!  I tried to get her to run around the bases with me…but she preferred to run back & forth between the playground & ballpark…thinking she was sneaking out every time!  We were both tired by the end – who wouldn’t be.

There’s nothing better than a quiet morning with just Maya & me!

As promised…tag-sale(ing)!

July 10, 2010

As I promised I will be a better blogger…and here we go.  Maya is napping, and instead of jumping right to all the stuff I SHOULD be getting done – like dishes & laundry & vacuuming (I know those who have seen my house are laughing right now – but I really do do those things:), I’m taking a break to talk about today’s adventure…all before 10am!

Maya & I went tag-sale(ing).  I seem to be a collector of stuff, which is not good. But with Maya home every day rather than in daycare, I feel it’s important to provide her with a few new activities here & there…hence the tag sales.  In my opinion these (and Walmart) are the BEST place to buy kid toys etc.  They can be so expensive in the stores and SO cheap at a tag sale.  Brand new once you clean them up, of course.  And it seems everyone wants to get rid of their kid stuff!  So I try to take advantange when I can.  But usually Maya’s nap doesn’t cooperate.  Today they were right down the street though so I was determined!

We went to 2.  one was a ‘multi-family’ sale.  This was the most pathetic excuse for a tag sale i’ve ever seen.  I won’t lie…I get excited when families get together to sell…more good stuff.  But there was less than what ONE family could have sold at this one.  And not only that, the stuff was just blah!  These people must have all been VERY boring!

Oh – did I mention I try to figure people out by what they’re selling.  I think a good tag sale can tell a lot about a family.  But I digress…

We didn’t walk away empy handed of course.  With Maya’s 1 year b-day coming up they had a great Minnie cake plate…now to figure out how to decorate it to make it LOOK like Minnie.  Andrew will probably be good at that, I’ll leave it to him!

The second tag sale was better.  Not great, but better.  I walked away with a few things – and even bartered on one…which I’m SO bad at.  I was VERY proud of myself.  Maya ended up with a new shape-sorter toy.  And I got a sun-shade for the beach in hopes that she might spend SOME time under there.  Maybe if I put the shovels…or better yet FOOD under there!

Anyway, all this deal happening went on well before most people were up for the day.  It’s always a thrill knowing you got to it before someone else! 🙂

I know i’m not alone because there were TONS of people at both sales looking for a deal.  But what are you favorite things to ‘hunt’ for?  And do you have the same problem I do….you might not need it, but it’s SUCH a good deal you buy it anyway?  You know you’ll use it, but you probably could have lived without it!

Well, time to get that stuff done I was talking about…some of it anyway!
